Bursting on to the stage with rock and roll swagger, a vision of big hair, leather and seventies style, it soon became clear to the judges and the 2000 strong audience behind them that James Archer, or ‘Jamie Afro’, as he shall hence forth be known, was not your average auditionee.

Having chatted to Mr. Afro moments before his performance we had a hunch that there was a tremendous treat in store for the panel of power, who after a long day of ruthless rejection were waiting impatiently with a ‘No’ perched on their lips.

“My sole purpose will be to not only impress the judges, but I’m going to get that crowd going.” explained Jamie. “And I’m not going to let them go until I’ve got every single one of them singing up there!”

Yes, it seems the new addition of the live audience hadn’t fazed the lively Londoner. In fact he was delighted with the development and, with his extensive experience of playing gigs, felt that it could help him outshine his fellow performers.

“I love it! I really vibe off the audience… and I think that’s why I’m going to stand out.” He revealed hopefully.

“We’re quite an inhibited sort of bunch us British… And sometimes we need someone to come along and say it’s ok to stand up, it’s ok to clap and it’s ok to go nuts out there!”

And once the man on a mission to entertain the nation was let loose on the audience, go nuts they did! Four resounding yes’s later and Jamie was winging his way to bootcamp… Mission accomplished!

Striking fear into the most confident of performers, reducing grown men to tears and causing proud grandmothers to barge on stage to defend their loved one’s honour… this is what we’ve come to expect from Simon Cowell.

King of the cutting comment that can crush a dream at 20 paces, Simon is not one for second chances and if you’re dying on stage you won’t find solace in his steely gaze. Or so we thought.

Here at The X Factor towers we think a softer side of Mr. Cowell is beginning to surface. Over the last two shows we’ve seen him let tone deaf no-hopers finish a whole song, give out alternative career advice to unsuccessful acts… and, shock horror, actually sing along with a performance.

Now, these are not the actions of our judge dread of old….

One of the star performers from the first show was undoubtedly Joseph McElderry, who blew the judges away with his soulful rendition of the Luther Vandross classic, Dance with My Father.

We caught up with Joe straight after his audition, and the young Tyne-sider could barely contain his joy after getting a string of glowing comments from the judging panel.

“The judges said some amazing things about me and I honestly can’t believe my audition went so well! Simon said he thought he’d found a popstar, and Cheryl told me she was proud that I was representing the north-east… I never expected to get comments like that, and now I just want to make sure that I do just as well at bootcamp.”

Not bad going for a boy who only started singing a few of years ago. Like so many other X Factor contestants from years gone by, Joseph only realised he had a good voice when he tried his hand at karaoke, but once he knew he could sing he knew it was something he wanted to spend his life doing.

“I want to perform for a living and I think The X Factor is a brilliant platform for me to achieve that goal.”

Joe entered a local competition called ‘Pride of South Tyne Side’ last June, and ended up winning performer of the year, this gave him a massive confidence boost and helped him make the decision to audition for this year’s X Factor.

However he admits to feeling pretty daunted when he found out the auditions were going to be in front of 2,000-strong crowds.

“At first I was nervous because it’s a bit like performing in front of 2,000 extra judges, but the more I thought about it the more I started to like the idea, because I find it easier singing to a big group of people instead just three or four sat behind a desk.

“Now I’ve been out there and it’s gone so well, I feel I could do it all again – I’m just so happy, I cannot wait for the next round… roll on bootcamp!”

After whipping the audience into a frenzy, receiving a rare standing ovation and his performance being hailed “the single best first audition” by the impenetrable Simon Cowell, it’s not hard to see why Danyl Johnson thought it might be a good idea to audition for this year’s X Factor.

But according to the 27-year-old teacher from Reading it took, ahem, A Little Help From His Friends to finally take the plunge.

We spoke to Danyl backstage, still on a soaring high after his mind-blowing performance and it seems we have his pupils to thank for the talented teacher bounding onto our screens.

“I said to the kids if I did really well I would sing at the end of term… I sang and they went absolutely insane! They went mental! They were, like, ‘you should do The X Factor!’ he explained excitedly. “So I thought, ok maybe I should.”

Until now Danyl has had the tricky task of keeping his audition a secret from his students.

“I still haven’t told them…I can’t wait!” he revealed. “But I wanna make sure I do them proud.”

After his riotous routine on stage we think the secret might be out for the dance and drama teacher and we’re sure he’ll receive straight A’s from his proud pupils.

Not only does this self-confessed “free spirit” have a love for belting out a tune, but Danyl can also add song-writing to his repertoire.

“I’d love to write for myself and others, as well as performing.” he confessed.

And with bootcamp now on the cards we can look forward to discovering what other talents this teacher’s pet has up his sleeve…
